On Thursday, Terhide Garfa allegedly committed suicide in the Kanshio community, a suburb of Makurdi, the capital city of Benue State.
An eyewitness named Nick reported discovering Garfa’s body around 3:45 pm inside a transformer. Nick, a local resident, expressed confusion about how Garfa managed to enter the fenced transformer area.
“Someone heard him saying he wanted to speak with his mother or he would kill himself, but it’s unclear if he managed to speak with her. The next thing we knew, people saw his lifeless body near the transformer,” Nick recounted.
Adakole Elijah, the Corporate Affairs Manager of Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED), described the incident as strange. He emphasized that the transformer is securely fenced, making the situation baffling.
“We found it strange that a transformer that was fully fenced could be accessed. We don’t know whether this was a case of suicide or attempted vandalism. The evidence suggests he forced his way into the transformer. JED has always warned people to stay away from its installations,” Elijah stated.
Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer for Benue State Command, confirmed the incident and noted that an investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances behind Garfa’s actions.
