A Kano Shari’a Court on Tuesday sentenced a 20-year-old man, Murtala Halliru, to six months in a correctional centre and ordered that he should be given 30 strokes of the cane for stealing 13 ceiling fans.
It was reported that Halliru, who lives at Gwammaja Quarters, Kano, was convicted on a count charge of theft after he pleaded guilty.
The presiding Judge, Nura Yusuf-Ahmad, sentenced the defendant to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine and ordered that he should be given 30 strokes of the cane.
Yusuf-Ahmad also ordered the convict to pay the sum of N44,000 as compensation for the ceiling fans.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Aliyu Abideen, had informed the court that the defendant committed the offence on February 23, at Kano State Polytechnic.
He said on the same date around noon, the Chief Security Officer of the polytechnic, Sani Suleiman, arrested the defendant in possession of two ceiling fans on his bicycle valued at N8,000.
“During the course of the investigation, the defendant confessed to having stolen 11 ceiling fans valued at N44,000 from the said polytechnic,” Abideen said.
He added that the offence contravened the provision of Section 133 of the Kano State Shari’a Law.
