In a recent ruling, the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt declared the seats of 25 lawmakers, who switched from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), vacant.
Presiding Judge Hon. Justice Charles Wali also ordered Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule to cease acting as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Furthermore, the court barred 24 lawmakers aligned with Governor Siminalayi Fubara from performing legislative duties.
The ruling, issued in Suit No PHC/1512/CS/2024, follows a case filed by Rt. Hon. Victor Oko Jumbo, Speaker of the Rivers State House Of Assembly, and others.
Defendants include Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, Hon. Dumle Maol, Hon. Major Jack, and others.
The court’s interim injunction prevents the affected lawmakers from functioning until the substantive case is resolved, with the next hearing scheduled for July 1, 2024.
