University of Benin Suspends Student Union Indefinitely Following Candidate Attack

The University of Benin’s management has taken decisive action by indefinitely suspending the university’s Student Union Government. The decision was prompted by an unfortunate incident involving an attack on the Edo State Labour Party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata, allegedly carried out by certain students purportedly affiliated with the student union.

In a statement released by the university’s Registrar, Ademola Bobola, on Monday, April 29, 2024, it was clarified that the suspension was a direct consequence of the events that transpired on Friday, April 12, 2024, at both the Faculty of Law and the University’s Senior Staff Club. Following a meticulous review of the situation by the university management, the Vice Chancellor has sanctioned the suspension of the students’ union.

Effective immediately from April 29, 2024, the suspension entails the relinquishment of all union properties held by union officers. These properties are to be surrendered to the Dean of Students’ Affairs no later than 4 pm on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.

To manage student affairs during the period of suspension, a Caretaker Committee has been established. This committee comprises representatives from various faculties, schools, and institutes. Their role is to ensure the coordination of student activities until further notice.

The university community has been duly informed of these developments, and compliance with the directives outlined by the Vice Chancellor is expected from all former union officers.
