Man escaping arrest jumps into Lagos lagoon, drowns

A man identified only as Azeez tragically lost his life after reportedly jumping into the lagoon in Lagos to escape arrest. The incident occurred following accusations of theft involving bags of cement.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the Lagos Police Command, confirmed the heartbreaking event to the press, detailing the circumstances surrounding Azeez’s demise. According to Hundeyin, the director overseeing the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) in Lagos Central promptly reported the incident to the Ikoyi Police Division around 12:20 pm on a Friday.

The initial report indicated that at approximately 10:45 am that same day, the LASEMA director received a distress call regarding an incident at the Lekki/Ikoyi Link Bridge. Upon arrival at the scene, a large crowd had gathered near the waterside, witnessing the tragic sight of Azeez’s lifeless body floating in the lagoon. Paramedics from Pre Hospital Care, Lagos, later confirmed Azeez’s death.

Further investigation revealed that Azeez had allegedly jumped into the lagoon while attempting to evade capture. It was reported that he was being pursued by Elijah Amos, a cement seller, who accused Azeez of stealing bags of cement. The intense chase led Azeez to take the desperate and fatal decision to leap into the water.

Upon receiving the report, law enforcement officials promptly visited the scene to assess the situation. Azeez’s body was subsequently recovered and evacuated to Mainland General Hospital Mortuary, Yaba, for autopsy and preservation purposes.

The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the grave consequences of desperate actions and the importance of peaceful resolution to disputes. Authorities continue their investigations into the circumstances surrounding Azeez’s untimely death.
