The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, reiterated his administration’s commitment to collaborating with investors to unlock the tourism potential within the state. Makinde emphasized the abundance of opportunities in the tourism sector, capable of fostering prosperity if effectively harnessed. Highlighting six major development sites in the state, including the Cultural Centre in Ibadan and Bower’s Tower, he underscored the significance of sustainable partnerships for successful investment endeavors.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the International Tourism Summit, #ITSOYOSTATE 2024, held at the International Conference Center, University of Ibadan, Makinde pledged support for stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of sustainable development. He assured investors of a conducive environment and promised to address infrastructural challenges, such as road improvements leading to key tourist attractions.
Addressing the theme, “Repositioning Tourism as a Drive for Sustainable Development in Oyo State,” Makinde outlined his administration’s strategy to promote interconnectivity across zones, attracting tourists and enhancing the business environment. He emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the visitor experience while creating opportunities for business travelers.
Makinde also unveiled plans to address infrastructure gaps, such as road repairs leading to Ikere Gorge Dam and Eruwa Agribusiness Hub, in response to investor interest in developing these sites. He reiterated the government’s dedication to facilitating partnerships that ensure sustainable growth and benefit both investors and the local community.
During the summit, Chairperson Onikepo Akande highlighted the importance of projecting a new image of tourism for sustainable development, while Minister of Tourism, Lola Ade-John, pledged support for the state’s tourism initiatives. Former Cross River State Governor, Donald Duke, emphasized the role of tourism in economic growth and attracting notable investors.
Other dignitaries, including Osun State Commissioner for Tourism Ojo Abiodun, former President of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes Bayo Oyero, National President of Nigeria Association of Tourism Operators Ime Udo, and Alado of Ado Awaye Oba Ademola Folakanmi, commended the state government’s efforts in tourism development and urged continued prioritization of the sector to boost the gross domestic product.
