Fire engulfs Osun food market

A late-night fire, on Friday, gutted a popular food commodity market in Ipetumodu, the headquarters of the Ife-North local government area of Osun State.

DAILY POST reports that the market, popularly called Akinola market, opens on Fridays.

The inferno was said to have started at the yam section, before it spread to other parts, destroying food items worth millions of naira.

A resident, Sola Omilana disclosed to newsmen that people thronged the market in the early hours of Saturday, sympathizing with shop owners over the incident.

Meanwhile, confirming the incident, Spokesperson of the Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Kehinde Adeleke stated that the incident was caused by dirt set on fire by shop owners after the day’s business.

“Preliminary findings showed that the fire was as a result of dirt set on fire by shop owners after the day’s business. But they did not put out the fire before leaving the market at night.

“Food commodities worth millions of naira were destroyed in the incident”, she added.
