Oyo cracks down on street trading

The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority has launched a series of raids against illegal street traders within Ibadan, the state capital.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, in Ibadan, said the operation led by the OYRTMA Chairman, Adekoya Adesagba, was conducted at Oritamerin, Gege, Agbeni and Ogunpa areas, Ibadan.

Adesagba, who was accompanied by the General Manager of the agency, Ayoade Adekola, explained that the move was to tackle the challenges of blocked roads and slow traffic in the target Ibadan areas.

He said makeshift markets and attendant severe traffic congestion, environmental pollution had become the order of the day, hence the raid.

To stem the trend, Adesagba said the traffic agency adopted measures to include the closure of market stalls and imposition of fines on those caught.

He disclosed that 12 individuals operating an illegal motor park in one of the markets were recently apprehended and fined.

He enjoined traders to desist from selling on the roads, emphasizing that the government’s efforts were geared towards ensuring their safety and protecting their property.

“The OYRTMA’s enforcement operation is part of the state government’s broader efforts to reduce accidents and improve road safety.

“This government’s initiatives have led to a significant reduction in accidents, and made the roads safer for marketers and road users alike,” he said.
