FG Decries Poor State of Abandoned Assets in Lagos, Plans Upgrades

The Federal Government has expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of its abandoned building assets in Lagos, including the 12-storey Federal Secretariat complex in Ikoyi.

Constructed in 1976, the complex was abandoned in 1991 following the relocation of the federal capital to Abuja.

During a four-day visit to Lagos, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, inspected several federal buildings under the ministry’s jurisdiction. The inspection included facilities such as the Lagos Field Headquarters at TBS, Onikan; the Federal Controller’s Office, Onikan; the Federal Lands Registry, Ikoyi; and the neglected Federal Secretariat in Ikoyi.

Dangiwa voiced his concerns over the abandonment and the pressing need for upgrades to the facilities, which he said pose security challenges to Lagos State. He noted that the Lagos Field Headquarters, which accommodates over 40 federal agencies, currently lacks basic utilities like water and electricity, while its sanitary infrastructure has completely collapsed.

Speaking to journalists, the minister announced plans to rehabilitate and repurpose the abandoned facilities through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement. He also revealed that he would inspect the Renewed Hope Housing Project in Ibeju-Lekki as part of his visit.
