The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reacted to a viral video showing a Deputy Route Commander, allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, in a statement by Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM), Corps Public Education Officer, (CPEO), said on Wednesday in Abuja, that the incident occurred in 2018.

Mohammed said that the case had been promptly investigated and disciplinary actions taken against the officer.

He condemned the officer’s behaviour, emphasising FRSC’s commitment to discipline among its personnel.

“The FRSC is an organisation that upholds discipline amongst its personnel, whether in uniform or out of uniform, and we condemned the irresponsible behavior or conduct of the officer in totality.

“The incident was promptly investigated at the instance of the then Corps Marshal and necessary disciplinary actions were adequately carried out at the end of the investigation, and trial that followed suit.

“However, the officer involved in the incident had passed away on Nov. 6, 2024, after a protracted illness,” the FRSC boss said.

He appealed to the public to verify the status and implications of information before sharing it, considering the emotional and psychological impact on the deceased officer’s family and friends.

“We commend bloggers for their prompt reportage of news articles, but we admonish the general public on the need to always verify the status and implications of information before being recycled as fresh.

“This is important and irrespective of the interest they intend to achieve with such publications,” Mohammed said.

He also said that corps was commitment to transparency and accountability, as it had made public the disciplinary actions taken against the officer, at the time of the incident,” Mohammed said.

The corps marshal urged the public to be cautious when sharing information online, especially when it involves sensitive or outdated content.
