Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade, Ohafia and unidentified gunmen in Mbata, Umuchima village, Isiala Ngwa North LGA, Abia State clashed on Monday morning.
According to reports, the soldiers and gunmen were engaged in a fierce gun battle after more than 15 Hilux vehicles and armoured personnel carriers arrived at Umuchima village around 6 a.m.
It was gathered that the gunmen converged near a river that marks the boundary between Abia and the Mbaise axis of Imo State.
Military troops have also reportedly taken control of key junctions leading in and out of the village as others engaged the gunmen in the surrounding bushes.
As of the time of filing this report, gunfire has persisted in the community and neither the Abia government nor the Nigerian Army had commented on the development.
