Tinubu congratulates Nigerian Tribune on 75th anniversary

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Nigerian Tribune on its 75th anniversary, commending the publication for its enduring legacy of journalism dedicated to social justice, democracy, and press freedom.

This was contained in a statement titled ‘President Tinubu commends Nigerian Tribune on 75 Years of progressive journalism,’ and issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Friday.

The Nigerian Tribune was founded on November 16, 1949, by Nigeria’s first Premier of the old Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and his wife, Hannah.

“President Tinubu applauds the newspaper, known as the Great Survivor, for faithfully upholding the vision of its founding publisher by promoting constructive nationalism, social justice, democracy, and press freedom while advocating for the rights of all Nigerians, irrespective of their economic, social, or political backgrounds,” the statement read.

Acknowledging the contributions of veteran journalists who shaped the Tribune’s mission, Tinubu paid tribute to figures like the former Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande; Ayo Ojewunmi, known as “Pen Atalanta”; Chief Tola Adeniyi; Biodun Oduwole; and Folu Olamiti.

These pioneers, he noted, helped sustain the newspaper’s influence even amid pressures to silence it.

“The Nigerian Tribune has established itself as a bastion of truth and a vigilant watchdog of society over the decades,” Tinubu remarked, adding that the publication has upheld its constitutional duty to inform and empower the public with integrity.

The President emphasised the importance of credible journalism rooted in facts and a commitment to social harmony in an era where digital platforms make it possible for anyone to become a “citizen journalist”.

Tinubu expressed his hope that the anniversary celebrations will honour the publication’s legacy and inspire a future marked by steadfast dedication to truth and responsible reporting.

He wished the Nigerian Tribune continued success as it champions democratic values and contributes to Nigeria’s progress.
