  • Nnamdi Kanu’s release not condition for South-East to support Tinubu in 2027 – Umahi

Nnamdi Kanu’s release not condition for South-East to support Tinubu in 2027 – Umahi

Minister of Works, Sen. Dave Umahi, has said the release of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, is not a condition for the South-East to support President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Umahi, who spoke to journalists on Friday night in Lagos, dismissed claims that the South-East had given conditions, including Kanu’s release, to support the President.

“Somebody asked me about Nnamdi Kanu, and I said his matter is not a condition for the South-East to support the President.

“We are willing to negotiate his release, but no one should make it a condition because the President did not put him there,” Umahi said.

The minister described Tinubu as a listening leader, and expressed faith that Kanu’s release would come through divine grace and dialogue, not through pressure or politics.

“President Tinubu may not be perfect, but he is doing most things right.

“Look at where he picked up the economy from. The international community has confidence in his reforms. That is why we are getting support for our projects,” he added.

Umahi highlighted key infrastructure projects being delivered by the Tinubu government in South-East, including rehabilitation of some roads abandoned by past administrations.

“Let those criticising the President show us what they have done for the country,” he said.

Umahi dismissed claims that the South-East is being sidelined in federal appointments, saying that Tinubu had done more for the geo-political zone than many past leaders.

He called for unity among political leaders regardless of party affiliation, noting that governors across the South-East — including those from opposition parties — were working well with the President.

Umahi stressed that he has no intention of contesting for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027.

“I will not run. I will work for my boss, President Tinubu.

“APC is the path to achieving what we want. The South-East now has a voice at the centre. We will not return to Egypt,” he said.

Let it be firmly stated that the PDP remains intact, cohesive, and more committed than ever to the renewed mission of rescuing and rebuilding Osun State. “To the people of Osun, your unrelenting support, constant engagement, and public show of love are not taken for granted. We remain grateful and even more committed to the collective dreams of a greater Osun State.”

We’ll resist NASS plan to remove minimum wage from exclusive list – NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, says it will oppose any attempt by the National Assembly to remove labour matters, including the minimum wage, from the exclusive legislative list of the Federal Government to the concurrent list, where individual states would determine their workers’ wages.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made the vow on Friday at the National Administrative Council, NAC, meeting of the Central Working Committee held in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Ajaero, who described the move as an exercise in futility, argued that the issue of minimum wage is treated globally as a national matter in line with International Labour Organisation, ILO, conventions, which regard member countries as entities, not sub-national units such as states.

According to him, the plan by the lawmakers was a calculated attempt to bastardise the national minimum wage structure and shift other labour-related responsibilities to the states, including the establishment of state industrial courts that would independently handle wage disputes, a move he said violates ILO principles.

“The National Assembly should not go into this exercise in futility unless members will also allow their respective states to determine their wages,” the labour leader said.

2027: Kwankwaso will not contest against Tinubu on our platform – NNPP

The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, has made it clear that Rabiu Kwankwaso, its candidate in the 2023 presidential polls, will not contest on their platform in 2027.

The assertion was made in a statement signed by the party’s National Chairman, Dr Agbo Major, on Saturday.

According to NAN, Major was reacting to Buba Galadima’s remarks that Kwankwaso will stay with NNPP and run for presidency on the party’s platform in 2027.

Galadima also denied Kwankwaso will not join the All Progressives Congress, APC.

But Major has insisted that both Kwankwaso and Galadima remain expelled from the NNPP.

“We cannot even allow Kwankwaso for whatever reason to return on the NNPP fold because of the problems and internal wranglings he created for us,” Major said.

He added: “He does not have the pedigree to match President Tinubu in any contest and so his ambition is dead on arrival.”

The National Secretary of the the newly formed African Democratic Congress, ADC, Rauf Aregbesola, has urged supporters not to insult or attack supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

  • UNN clarifies rumours of student abduction on campus

UNN clarifies rumours of student abduction on campus

The management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has clarified recent rumours of the alleged abduction of a female student within the Nsukka campus of the university.

The clarification was contained in a press statement by the Acting Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Inya Agha Egwu on Friday.

According to the PRO, “On the morning of Saturday, 21st June 2025, the University Community was deeply unsettled by news suggesting that a postgraduate student had been abducted during a morning walk within the premises of our Nsukka Campus. After careful review and investigation by our Security Unit and other security agencies, we wish to categorically state that while one of our students was indeed abducted, the abduction took place outside the University campus.

“The victim, Ms. Dorcas Agabison, a postgraduate student, encountered her abductors outside the campus gates during her routine morning walk.

“However, the Management is relieved to report that Ms. Agabison was released shortly after the incident and she is in good health.

“Because of the general security challenges in the country, we advise our staff and students to be cautious about their movements outside the borders of our campuses, especially during early and late hours.

“Our campus security personnel remain on high alert at all entry and exit points, and they are always ready to deal with intruders and criminal elements who would want to jeopardise the security of our staff and students,” he said.

The statement noted that the campuses are well secured for physical exercises and advised students and staff to make use of the facilities within the campuses for any activity.

“The University of Nigeria campuses are sufficiently spacious and secure for physical exercises such as morning walks and other recreational activities. Facilities such as the University Stadium, open fields, and halls provide safe alternatives for these purposes.

“Our Security Unit is working with the Nigerian Police and neighbourhood security in an ongoing investigation to apprehend the abductors.

“We urge anyone with relevant information to contact the Security Unit of UNN or a nearby police station,” the statement added.

In a related development, the Acting Chief Security Officer of UNN, Mr Christian Alumona, has advised members of the university community to be security conscious and report any act of suspected criminality to the appropriate authorities.

In a memo he addressed to the University community, captioned “Security Caution”, Alumona noted that the security advice was a result of increasing security threats in society.

“We wish to advise members of the University community to remain security conscious and cautious about the people they interact with within and outside the campus.

“Students are particularly advised to prioritise their studies and minimise social activities that take them outside the university campus, where they may be exposed to big security risks

“Notably, some students who engage in early morning physical exercises venture beyond the university premises which poses security risks. Consequently, we strongly advise that such exercises be conducted within the safer confines of the university.

“Avoid passing through the university Gates while in the early morning exercises especially the UBA gate towards the Green House area which is isolated. Better still, make use of the university stadium,” the CSO said.

Alumona, who shared three security hotlines in the memo advise the university community members to always contact any nearby security office outpost or personnel if they have any concerns or need for assistance.

LASTMA officials rescue man trapped in crushed vehicle

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has rescued an unidentified man who was trapped in a crushed car after a container-laden truck lost control and collided with a Toyota Sienna minivan at Idi-Iroko, entering Maryland, on Lagos’ Ikorodu Road corridor early Saturday.

According to reports, the incident took place about 1:30 a.m. and included a fully loaded 40-foot Mack truck and a white Toyota Sienna with the registration number LSR 267 GZ.

According to LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq, the truck’s brakes failed due to claimed high speed, causing the container to separate and topple onto the minivan.

Taofiq said,” Acting with commendable dispatch, the LASTMA midnight surveillance and rescue unit responded swiftly to distress calls.

“Upon arrival, officers employed an array of high-grade rescue apparatus and executed a painstaking extraction operation.

“Their valiant and highly synchronised efforts led to the miraculous rescue of a male occupant who had been pinned within the wreckage of the minivan and was treated by operatives of LASAMBUS.”

He added that the truck driver fled the scene, apparently out of panic and fear of mob retaliation or criminal prosecution.

It was said that the mangled Sienna was later towed to the Anthony Police Station, while the truck and its dislodged container were impounded and moved to LASTMA’s operational headquarters for further investigation

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the professionalism of the agency’s emergency response team.

“This deeply distressing incident highlights, yet again, the perilous consequences of mechanical laxity, reckless driving, and habitual speeding on our thoroughfares.

“We therefore issue an urgent appeal to all truck operators to uphold the highest safety standards and adhere strictly to extant traffic regulations to forestall further avoidable disasters,” the LASTMA boss said.

Bakare-Oki also commended the rescue team for working from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. to restore order and ensure the free flow of traffic in the area.
