Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, is the highest-paid footballer in Serie A with his recent Napoli contract and bonuses seeing him rise above Juventus forward in the Italian topflight earnings chart.
Osimhen, who joined Napoli from Lille in 2020, signed a new contract in December that earns him a monthly salary of £1.29m, almost doubling his previous earnings.
Paris Saint-Germain forward, Kylian Mbappe, is the best-paid player with an eye watering monthly take home of £5.15 million.
Osimhen’s new salary was a reward for his performance in the 2022/23 season where he inspired Napoli to a first Serie A title in 33 years and he also capped it off with the league topscorer award after scoring 26 league goals.
Napoli reportedly refused an offer of more than €200m for Osimhen from a team in Saudi Arabia last summer. The 25-year-old was signed from Lille in 2020 for a fee of around €75m and the Nigeria international has gone on to establish himself as one of the most exciting strikers in the world.
Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne is the highest earner in the Premier League earning a £400,000 weekly wage while in La Liga, Frenkie De Jong tops with a £615,682 wage.
Just arriving in the Bayern this summer, Harry Kane is the highest earner in the German topflight with a wage of £410,455 per week. Osimhen is the highest earner in Serie A with £253,005 per week while Mbappe is the highest earner in the French Ligue 1 and also in Europe’s top five leagues with a £1,182,110 weekly wage.
Serie A top five earners
Highest Earner – Victor Osimhen
Osimhen, who joined Napoli from Lille in 2020, signed a new contract in December that earns him a weekly wage of £253,005 almost doubling his previous earnings.
Juventus’ talisman Dusan Vlahovic takes the second spot in the Italian top flight. When the Old Lady secured his services from Fiorentina, the Serb was seen as Cristiano Ronaldo’s long-term replacement. Perhaps still yet to live up to the lofty standards set by the aforementioned Portuguese great, having registered 35 goals and a further eight assists for his current employers.
His fellow Juventus teammates Wojciech Szczesny (£197,675) and Alex Sandro (£182,406) both make the top five Serie A earners, too, and one of the league’s most underrated assets Hakan Calhanoglu, who pockets £182,406, per week.
Premier League top five earners
Highest Earner – Kevin De Bruyne
All you need to do is take Kevin De Bruyne out of Pep Guardiola’s starting line-up and you’ll see how important he is to everything they muster going forward. After failing to stamp his authority at Stamford Bridge earlier in his career, the pale-faced Belgian tipped up to the Etihad Stadium – and eyebrows were raised.
He has done everything in his power, however, to silence the critics. A midfield magician capable of picking out a marauding forward, most notably Erling Haaland, on a sixpence. He may earn £400,000 per week, but given the creativity-inspired exploits that he shows in all but every outing, he is worth every penny in the eyes of the Manchester City hierarchy. It’s pretty hard to argue against the idea that he should earn more than his peers.
Players in Manchester clubs dominate the top five highest earners in the English topflight as Erling Haaland earning £375,000 per week and £19.5m per year comes second to teammate in Man City De Bruyne who makes £20.8m per year. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is third in the list earning £350,000 per week.
Manchester United players round out the top five with Casemiro and Raphael Varane earning £350,000 per week and £340,000 respectively.
La Liga top five earners
Highest Earner – Frenkie De Jong
Perennially linked to Premier League outfit Manchester United, Frenkie De Jong – who worked under Red Devils chief Erik ten Hag at Ajax – has forged a wonderful career, all while earning a pretty penny. Ten Hag could get a second bite at the cherry, given Barcelona are mulling over whether to sell the Dutchman, but any would-be buyer will have to get the chequebook out to work out how to pay his wages worth £615,682 per week.
De Jong was one of the most sought-after midfielders in world football after being an integral part of Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2018 and opted for the basking sun of Catalonia. He’s been a mainstay in the centre of the park for them ever since – but could up and leave in search of a new challenge this summer.
Behind De Jong is teammate Robert Lewandowski who earns £444,605 per week and a wage total of £23.1m yearly.
Real Madrid trio Toni Kroos, David Alaba and Luka Modric complete the top fove with £400,276, £369,409 and £359,230 earned per week respectively.
Bundesliga top five earners
Highest Earner – Harry Kane
The long-awaited replacement for Robert Lewandowski, Tottenham Hotspur and England’s all-time top goalscorer, Harry Kane, has hit the ground running at Bayern Munich. Having notched 31 goals in his opening 27 domestic appearances under Thomas Tuchel, it’s safe to say that the large sum of money spent on his signature has paid dividends, as is the £410,455 paid into his bank account every week.
A well-rounded striker, who has shown his ability to drop deep, score countless goals and link play with the midfield bank of Bayern, Kane has emerged as one of the best British-born exports to ply their trade overseas. His teammates Manuel Neuer (£344,782), Thomas Muller (£336,573), Leroy Sane (£328,364) and Joshua Kimmich (£320,155) follow as the Bundesliga’s top five earners.
Ligue 1 top five earners
Highest Earner – Kylian Mbappe
Who else other than Paris Saint-Germain ace Kylian Mbappe? The French forward, 25, has been a constant thorn in Ligue 1 defences since emerging from Monaco’s youth set-up in 2016. A permanent move to the country’s biggest club came to fruition in 2018 and he has been on red-hot form since.
After reportedly choosing to join Real Madrid in the summer, it will leave the door ajar for Ousmane Dembele – another PSG star – to become the division’s highest-paid player as he currently sits second earning £328,364.
Expectedly, it is Luis Enrique’s side who boast the top five highest earners in France’s top flight with Lucas Hernandez (£311,946), Marquinhos (£275,826) and Milan Skriniar (£268,602) earning the big bucks at Parc des Princes.
Dozens of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in Enugu State have crossed over to the All Progressives Congress (APC) along with their supporters. Among the notable defectors received at the party’s secretariat in Enugu on Saturday were former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Anti-corruption and Financial Crimes, Senator Chukwuka Utazi, and former Nigerian Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Ambassador Fidelia Njeze.
Joining them in their defection were Davidson Nnamani, Juliet Oloto, Chika Idoko, Jonathan Eze, and Mr. Umunna Ugwu of the Young Progressives Party. The event was graced by APC leaders including Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology and APC Enugu State leader, Uche Nnaji, APC National Deputy Chairman South, Emma Eneukwu, and APC National Vice Chairman South East, Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu.
Explaining his decision to defect, Senator Utazi, who represented Enugu North Senatorial District from 2015 to 2023, cited the need to align with the APC to realize Igbo presidency. He emphasized that being part of the APC was crucial for Enugu’s progress and to gain influence at the national level.
In his address, Utazi stressed, “If you are not at the center, you are failing. The only way to achieve Igbo presidency is by being part of the APC. I want to serve in the party because APC is the gateway to national prominence. We will encourage more members to join us and together, with party discipline, we will make significant strides.”
Welcoming the defectors into the APC fold, Eneukwu urged them to uphold party loyalty and warned against engaging in activities contrary to the party’s interests, emphasizing that such behavior would not be tolerated.
The state chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory have announced their intention to submit the names of prominent individuals allegedly involved in anti-party activities during the 2023 elections.
Following the presidential election in 2023, several party members have sought sanctions against specific individuals believed to have acted against the party’s interests. In a recent meeting between the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) and state chairmen in Abuja, the PDP National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, underscored the importance of identifying and addressing individuals engaged in anti-party actions.
In response, the Chairman of Chairmen of the PDP and Kaduna State Chairman, Felix Hyat, revealed that the state chairmen have the backing of the NWC to discipline certain individuals at the state level, adhering to the party’s constitution. In an exclusive interview, Hyat emphasized that state chapters will also prioritize reconciliation efforts when necessary.
Hyat explained, “Disciplinary actions and addressing anti-party activities are matters that are handled at the local level; it’s not solely directed from the national level. However, this doesn’t preclude state chapters from addressing issues. The national body also faced challenges with some key figures. Some advocated for disciplinary measures, while others called for reconciliation.”
He further elaborated, “The nature of anti-party activities varies from one location to another. For instance, failing to participate in voting despite being a party member constitutes anti-party behavior, as voting is crucial for the party’s success. Conversely, publicly declaring support for another party at a polling station is a more severe form of anti-party conduct.”
Hyat emphasized the autonomy of state chapters in addressing such issues, stating, “Politics is inherently localized, so state chapters have the prerogative to address matters according to their unique circumstances. State chairmen will take decisive actions, and names of individuals they are unable to discipline will be forwarded to the national body, as stipulated in the party’s constitution.”
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has emphasized that the state lags behind in development compared to the other 19 states in northern Nigeria. Speaking during a Ramadan fast-breaking event with Muslim faithful in Makurdi on Friday, Alia pledged to change this narrative by implementing transformative projects aimed at elevating Benue to a position of prominence among its peers nationwide.
“Among the 19 northern states, Benue ranks among the least developed. It is only now that we are beginning to install solar streetlights,” remarked Alia. Undeterred by challenges, he affirmed his commitment to infrastructure development, education, salary payments, and provision of essential amenities like streetlights.
Addressing concerns raised by critics, Alia emphasized his dedication to serving the interests of the people who overwhelmingly voted for him. “The masses of Benue elected me with unprecedented support, and I owe it to them to prioritize their welfare,” he asserted. Encouraging youth engagement in agriculture, Alia urged them to embrace farming opportunities and assured government support through cooperative initiatives and capital assistance.
Earlier in his sermon, Chief Imam of Benue, Malam Umar Garba, invoked blessings upon Governor Alia and the people of Benue. Recognizing the significance of leadership in societal prosperity, Garba affirmed Alia’s God-fearing leadership as instrumental in fostering divine blessings upon the state.
The Ogun State Police Command has apprehended a 54-year-old man identified as Chizoke Obiadada, along with his 17-year-old son, Micheal, following their alleged involvement in the death of their neighbour’s wife, Tope Owoade.
According to a statement released by the spokesperson of the state police command, SP Omolola Odutola, the tragic incident occurred on Thursday, March 28, 2024. Obiadada and his son reportedly engaged the deceased in a physical altercation after she objected to them sitting on a table she used for selling cow skin, also known as ponmo.
The suspects were arrested after the husband of the deceased, Isiaka Owoade, reported the incident to the police at the Ogijo divisional office.
In a statement issued by the police spokesperson, it was revealed that Isiaka Owoade recounted how, upon returning from a journey, his late wife informed him that on the previous day, Chizoke Obiadada and his son, Micheal Obiadada, had attacked her with multiple blows, resulting in severe injuries.
The altercation allegedly escalated when Tope Owoade cautioned the duo against sitting on her work table.
As a result of the assault, Tope sustained fatal injuries, including severe bleeding from her womb and private parts.
Despite being rushed to Main Frame Private Hospital and Kunle Hospital, Atan Agowa, she was tragically rejected for treatment. She eventually succumbed to her injuries while being transported to a government hospital.
Upon receiving the report, the Ogijo Divisional Police Officer promptly ordered the arrest of the suspects, who are currently undergoing preliminary investigations. The case is set to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further scrutiny.
Efforts are underway to deposit the deceased at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, morgue for post-mortem examination.
EFCC to Prosecute Binance and Executives Over Alleged Money Laundering
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to arraign Binance Holdings Limited and two of its senior executives, Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla, for their alleged involvement in a $35,400,000 money laundering case. Despite Anjarwalla’s recent escape from custody and fleeing Nigeria, the EFCC is determined to pursue the case.
Following the initial charges filed by the EFCC against Binance Holdings Limited, Gambaryan, and Anjarwalla, the commission has intensified efforts to prosecute the case. Despite Anjarwalla’s escape, the EFCC has obtained a court warrant for his arrest and extradition, collaborating with international law enforcement agencies for his apprehension.
The charges against Binance and its executives include engaging in financial activities without proper licensing, unlawful foreign exchange transactions, conspiracy to conceal the origin of proceeds from illegal activities, and money laundering.
In response to Anjarwalla’s escape, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) confirmed the incident and initiated efforts to recapture him. Anjarwalla’s escape has raised concerns among security agencies, leading to the arrest of personnel responsible for his custody and ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding his escape.
The Federal Government, through the ONSA, has urged the public and international community to provide any information that could aid in Anjarwalla’s arrest. This development comes amid ongoing investigations into money laundering and terrorism financing activities linked to the Binance platform.
Despite the challenges posed by Anjarwalla’s escape, the EFCC remains committed to prosecuting the case and ensuring accountability in financial transactions associated with Binance.
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, Welcomes Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Emphasizing Sacrifice and Unity
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo paid a courtesy visit to the Government House in Benin City, the Edo State capital, where he was warmly received by Governor Godwin Obaseki on Saturday.
During the visit, Obasanjo emphasized the importance of sacrifice and selflessness among political leaders, urging Nigerians to remain hopeful despite the challenges facing the country.
Commending Governor Obaseki for the warm reception, Obasanjo encouraged leaders to prioritize the collective good over personal interests. He stated, “The situation in Nigeria is challenging, but every difficult situation can be overcome.
The key question is how and when? Those in positions of power now have a unique opportunity to govern the country and serve the people. It’s not about ‘me’ but ‘we’; not about ‘mine’ but ‘ours’; not about ‘my tomorrow’ but ‘our tomorrow,’ encompassing all generations, present and future. This is the essence of sustainable development—to ensure that we leave a better world for generations to come.”
Reflecting on Governor Obaseki’s achievements over the past seven and a half years, Obasanjo appreciated the governor for his developmental strides and commitment to the progress of Edo State. He remarked, “The governor took the opportunity to update me on the progress and projects underway in Edo State.”
