The Director General of the National Pension Commission Aisha Dahir Umah has reiterated determination to driving greater Financial Inclusion in Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy by boosting Informal Sector participation in the Contributory Pension Commission CPS.

Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of a One Day Sensitization Conference in Abuja organized for Civil Society Groups, the Director General who was represented by Mr. Abdulkadir Dahiru, the Commission’s Head of Corporate Communication, maintained that the Informal Sector constitutes a critical component of the Commission’s overall target for the Contributory Pension Scheme. She maintained that the total Pension Asset as at the Third Quarter of 2022 was over 14 trillion Naira.

She espoused the need and impact of the Micro-pension plan as a panacea for old age poverty in the Informal Sector and reiterated that Micro-pension funds are invested for the benefit of the Contributors.

She charged the Civil Society Groups to enroll en-mass in the Micro-Pension plan which is targeted at covering fourty million participants by 2024.

Participants at the Conference commended the leadership and management of PenCom for organizing such critical engagement for Civil Societies, and pledged their commitment to drive the advocacy for greater participation in the Contributory Pension Scheme especially by Informal Sector players.

The Sensitization Conference is part of the program of PenCom to drive greater participation in the Contributory Pension Scheme. This 2022 Sensitization Conference has the theme: “Enhancing Informal Sector Participation in the Contributory Pension Scheme: the Role of Civil Society Groups”, and had several Civil Societies in attendance.
