Cape Verde will receive the first International Solidarity Committee emergency delegation who will be in the country to assess the continous violation of diplomatic immunity of Alex Saab, a Venezuelan diplomat, and also discuss how important his role is in the country.
The famous Cape Verde Religious Leader, Bishop Felipe Teixeira will lead the humanitarian committee which is part of an ongoing international solidarity campaign to ensure the release of saab and stop his extradition to the US.
Other members of the delegation includes, Human rights Activists, Sara Flouder of International Action Centre, Roger Harris of Task Force on the Americas and Cape Verde Politician, Pericles Tavares.
The committee had earlier initiated an international petition calling on President Jorge Carlos Fonseca, Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva and US President Joe Biden to release Alex Saab from detention and put an end to the extradition process which they described as illegal.
The petitions was signed by a large number of people which includes former UN special rapporteur on human rights, Alfred de Zayas; Peace activist, Medea Benjamin; Intellectual, Noam Chomsky; Senior peace organizer, Al Marde; Historian and journalist, Vijay Prashad and Max Blumenthal.
Others are: Joe Lombardo of United National
Antiwar Coalition; Jesús Rodríguez-Espinoza of Orinoco Tribune; Paul Liem of the Korean Policy Institute; Ajamu Baraka of the Black Alliance for Peace, among other renowned attorneys in the US, Canada, and Venezuela
Alex Saab was arrested while having a stop over on his way back to Iran from Venezuela because of a request by the US led by Donald Trump on the ground of money laundering. The Venezuelan government kicked against the move and claimed that Mr Saab was its Special Envoy and was on a humanitarian mission.
They added that before Saab’s arrest, he was on a trip to get food and medical supplies in Iran before being arrested by security operatives in Cape Verde while having a stop over.
The legal battle is Alex Saab’s case has been prolonged for a while and has attracted international attention over several allegations of external pressures
