The Nigeria Police said a total of 17,500 operatives have been deployed to ensure a seamless local government election in Rivers State on Saturday.
The spokesman for the State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, who disclosed this in a statement said the number would be complemented by deployment from other security agencies.
While noting that there would be restriction of movement, he said adequate security had been put in place to ensure that the April 17 council election was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere.
“To realise the full objectives of the council elections and engender a peaceful exercise, the command has deployed a total of 17,500 men to be complemented to be complemented by deployment from other sister agencies.
“This is aimed at providing safety, security and due maintenance of law and order before, during and after the elections.”
The statement further said the state Commissioner of Police, Eboka Friday, said there “will be total restriction of movement of persons, vehicles and any mechanical propelled engines either on land or waterways throughout the election duration.”
