The Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has held her 9th Convocation Ceremony for its 1946 graduating students, making it the first University in Nigeria to conduct an online Convocation.
A statement by the Public Relation Officer of the University, Mr Ademola Adesoji noted that this is done as part of the University’s efforts to adapt to the new normal triggered by the Coronavirus pandemic, Osun State University today, 21st September conduct the first-ever virtual convocation in the history of public universities in Nigeria.
The convocation ceremony which took place at the Olagunsoye Oyinlola Auditorium of the main campus of the University had series of dignitaries, graduands and professionals participate virtually as the Special adviser to the Secretary General of the United Nations on Sustainable Development Goals, Professor Jeffery David Sachs delivers the 9th convocation lecture.
The Osun State Governor and Visitor to Osun State University, Gboyega Oyetola, who addressed the congregation virtually, challenged universities in Nigeria to lead the society out of the challenges posed by the Coronavirus pandemic ravaging the entire world.
He also charged the institutions to look inward and invest more in researches, innovations, and technologies as a permanent way to prepare the world for eventualities that may come in the future.
In the same vein, the Pro-Chancellor and the Chairman Governing Council of Osun State University, Mallam Yusuf Ali, SAN charged the Federal and State Government to increase the level of funding to the Universities for research, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure development.
In the advent of the pandemic, Mallam Ali said, any University that fails to venture into Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure development will likely not be able to offer course for students in the near future.
Yusuf explained that COVID-19 has provided a rare opportunity for Nigeria Universities academic to join the bandwagon of other Universities all over the world.
According to him, “For us as a University, it was as if we saw this current pandemic in a crystal ball. Serious effort in the last two years had gone into the development of our ICT infrastructure on all the campuses and this act of foresightedness had made it possible for the University to conduct the first-ever virtual Uniosun 9th Convocation, teaching activities, and matriculation, the first of its kind among all the higher institutions in Nigeria.”
The Vice-Chancellor of the Institution, Professor Labode Popoola, disclosed that the university confers 35 First Class on a total of 1946 graduands during its 9th convocation ceremony for 2020. “
This 1946 graduands comprises of 1834 which will be conferred with first degrees across the Colleges of the University, and 52/graduands with higher degrees. Out of 1834 that will be conferred with first degrees, 28 first-class degrees, representing 1.58% of the total number of graduands will be awarded to those students who have distinguished themselves academically.
Also, 581 made second class (upper), 943 in second class lower, 272 made the third class, while only 10 will be awarded the pass degree. This will bring to a total of 11,785 numbers of first degrees that we have awarded since our first graduation in 2011,” Professor Popoola added.
