There was tragedy on Owerri-Onitsha Road in Owerri, Imo state, on Friday, as a tanker laden with petrol exploded and killed two persons.
The incident which happened at Irete caused panic in the area. Our correspondent who visited the scene around noon was told that the driver of the tanker and a woman who was said to be coming back from a nearby market died in the explosion.
Others who were affected by the explosion were rushed to hospitals.
An eyewitness, Kingsley Eke, told our correspondent that if not for the timely intervention of the men of the state fire service, the explosion would have wrecked more havoc.
He said, “The incident would have been more disastrous but for the swift arrival of firefighters. Their early arrival salvaged the situation because they quickly put out the fire.
“It is unfortunate that two persons – the driver and a woman – died in the fire. Others who sustained injuries have been rushed to a hospital.”
The police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the incident.
He however said that he could only confirm one death as of the time of filing this report.
