On the 1st of February 2020, Lagos State Government finally implemented the restriction of motorcycle and tricycle on several roads within Lagos, the said ban was said to be an implementation of a law in Lagos state that stated that any motorcycle that will move within Lagos metropolis must be above 200CC.
Before now, motorcycle has been largely claimed to be a life saver for Lagosians as it seems to be the fastest and the most reliable means of transportation and truth be told almost everybody in Lagos know that there is a regulation even though it was not clearly stated. In fact security operatives within Lagos also use motorcycle as a means of transportation.
On the 1st of October 2019, when Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu was speaking at the Platform, a programme organised by Covenant Christian Centre to address some pressing, notable topics in Nigeria, he stated clearly that his administration is about to create a system to harmonize motorcycle riders and ensure that they are all registered so that they can be known and identified. He also applauded the bike hailing companies i.e Max Ng, Gokoda and Opay for bringing in technology into transportation and helping people to escape the traffic in Lagos and he stated clearly that his administration is ready to work with them to see how it will work better.
Shortly before then, there was a move by the Lagos state government to regularize the bike hailing companies to bring them under a law that requires them to obtain a license from Lagos state government before operating and the alleged amount was about N25million for 1000 motorcycle and if you have more you have to register more.
If you study my line of thought there has been a high level of inconsistency of the part of the government. They claimed to be worried about safety, and i agree that safety is importance but the question is if this is a ban or a restriction.
Police Officer who were perhaps overzealous were seen all around Lagos arresting anything that has two wheels and of cause, who is monitoring, who will arrest the arrester? Even power bikes are being arrested because the enforcer doesnt the law he is sent to enforce.
In planning to hang out and you undress, you dont go out naked right? You have to wear another cloth, which is most times a better cloth. Ask me, what alternative fast means of transportation has the government provided for Lagosians? I dont know. Its only in the heart of few.
But i bet, it’s buses. We cry everyday of the number of cars and buses within Lagos, then you take away motorcycle and tricycle automatically inviting more cars and buses and surely sharp Danfo Drivers have increased price because the time of harvest is here.
I may be wrong but i think Lagos is insensitive to the need of the people and thats where the problem comes from. Surely traffic has increased in Lagos.
Talking water and rail transportation is good but people still need to get to the station but Lagos doesnt even know that, it is only those that are affected that knows that.
Its sad enough for a beginning of a new month and i will call on the Governor of Lagos state, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu to please review this policy and let’s have it better worked out.
There are implications always but joblessness in Lagos will cause more harm than good and you need to be sensitive to the need of people so that you can implement a law that will solve a problem for them.
