The Federal Government on Tuesday suspended the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Damilola Ogunbiyi, indefinitely.
It also ordered the Managing Director of the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading company, Marilyn Amobi, to step down with immediate effect.
It was gathered that the suspension of Ogunbiyi and the order mandating Amobi to quit were issued by the Minister of Power, Sale Mamman.
The minister’s Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Aaron Artimas, told our correspondent in Abuja that the managing director of REA was suspended indefinitely following infractions in the agency.
In the case of NBET boss, the minister’s assistant said she was asked to step down as a result of the myriad of complaints against her.
Artimas stated that a five-man investigative committee had been mandated to look into the issues and complaints filed against the NBET boss.
Ogunbiyi was asked to proceed on indefinite suspension and to hand over to the most senior officer in the REA.
“Following some apparent infractions in the Rural Electrification Agency, the Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, has directed the Managing Director of the agency, Damilola Ogunbiyi, to proceed on indefinite suspension with immediate effect,” the FMP said in a statement issued by Artimas.
It added, “Ogunbiyi is to hand over to the next most senior officer in the agency. Consequently, the minister has directed an immediate investigation into the activities of the agency towards repositioning it for better service delivery.”
The power minister, according to another statement issued by his media assistant, said the NBET boss had to step down to allow the government reorganise the electricity bulk trading firm.
The statement reads in part, “In continuation of the reorganisation/sanitation in the Federal Ministry of Power, the (power) minister has directed the Managing Director of the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading company to step down with immediate effect.
“In view of this, the minister has also directed the constitution of a five-man investigative committee to look into the myriads of complaints against the MD/CEO with a view to restoring sanity in the management of the company.
“Consequently, she is to handover to the most senior director in the organisation.”
Although suspended from REA, Ogunbiyi was appointed on October 29, 2019, as the Special Representative for Sustainable Energy for All and Co-Chair of United Nations-Energy.
