Remain in Nigeria to salvage the country, Buhari tells youths

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday urged Nigerian youths to remain in Nigeria to help salvage the country.

He spoke at the 44th convocation ceremony of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife.

The president was represented by the deputy executive secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Suleiman Raman-Yusuf.

He said, “It is high time that universities took more proactive roles in ensuring that graduands perform more meaningfully in the world of works.

“It is in view of this that we wish to exhort our youths to start looking inwards, stay and advance the cause of their motherland. We have no other country than Nigeria. We should remain here to salvage the country together.”

Buhari reiterated that the future of Nigeria remained with providing quality education to the citizenry.

While he noted that government needed support to fund education, he challenged universities to ensure they increase their internally generated revenue (IGR) to enhance sustainable education.

The vice chancellor of the university, Eyitope Ogunbodede, in his remarks said that the university was reviewing the curricular of all academic programmes, in line with current developments and standards.

According to the vice chancellor, in reviewing the curricular, emphasis was centred on training job creators and not mere job seekers.

He said OAU, soon, would not depend on the national grid, but would enerate its own electricity.
